Sustainable Roots

Pembina Co-op is proud to announce that our Sustainable Roots tree planting initiative is returning for 2026.

Sustainable Roots is a reimbursement grant created to help enhance green spaces across the communities we serve. Since launching the program in 2021, trees have been planted in over 24 locations throughout our trading area, helping improve parks, community spaces, and gathering places for years to come.

At Pembina Co-op, we know that change begins in our own backyard. Through our Sustainability Pillar, we are committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen our communities while caring for the environment.

"We give back to our communities in so many ways. This was an opportunity for us to not only give back to our communities, but to give back to the environment in a meaningful way," said Becky Switzer, People, Culture & Communications Manager.

How the Sustainable Roots Grant Works

Each year, Pembina Co-op selects several community projects to receive up to $1,500 in funding to purchase trees for local planting initiatives.

This is a reimbursement grant, meaning organizations will purchase the trees upfront and submit their receipt to receive reimbursement (up to $1,500).

Successful applicants will also work with Pembina Co-op to schedule a community tree-planting day, where Pembina Co-op volunteers will join community volunteers to help bring the project to life.

Organizations applying should be prepared to:

  • Provide volunteers to help plant the trees
  • Supply tools and materials needed for planting (shovels, water, mulch, etc.)
  • Ensure trees are planted during the 2026 season before October 9
  • Help care for the trees after planting

Application Timeline

  • Application Period: April 1  30, 2026
  • Notification: Successful applicants will be contacted no later than May 22, 2026

We look forward to working with local organizations to plant trees and help create greener, healthier communities across the Pembina Co-op region.
