COMMUNITY SPACES - Pilot Mound Courtyard
Actions$47K for Pilot Mound Courtyard
After five years and more than 100 projects, Co-op Community Spaces is continuing to invest in community projects across Western Canada – including new funding for United Community Arts (Pilot Mound, MB.).
This year, Co-op is providing $46,700 to create a new community courtyard in Pilot Mound, Man., with fruit trees, small garden plots, pond and benches. The space will be used by the community for events, such as art classes, music performances, book readings and gardening workshops.
The United Community Arts is excited to begin work on their green space renovation project and is grateful to the Co-op for so generously funding their endeavour. "The area will incorporate walking paths, seating areas, a pond, fruit trees and a vegetable garden. We want it to give back to the community in a variety of ways," said board member Bill Tiessen.
Co-op Community Spaces has been developed to help protect, beautify and improve spaces across Western Canada. In 2019, the program is providing $2 million to 26 community projects from Vancouver Island to Manitoba. Since 2015, Co-op has donated $8.5 million to 114 projects.
“Co-op Community Spaces aims to bring people together, creating places for everyone and building a lasting legacy that benefits our community into the future,” said Dale Pouteau, General Manager of Pembina Co-op. “We’re happy to be a contributing partner on projects like this. They reflect the spirit and dedication of the people within our community.”

Pembina Co-op & United Community Arts Break Ground
On June 27, 2019 the United Community Arts Board hosted a barbecue lunch on their grounds with Pembina Co-op to celebrate being one of the 26 winning recipients of the Co-op Community Spaces program. It was the official groundbreaking ceremony for the community courtyard.
Every year, Community Spaces receives hundreds of applications for funding for various recreational, environmental conservation and urban agricultural spaces. In this fifth year of the program, Community Spaces supported 114 projects with a total of $8.5 million since 2015. With over 170 co-op associations in western Canada working together, this program works to make a difference in local communities for projects big and small, awarding between $25,000 and $150,000 to selected recipients across B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
The UCA was awarded $46,700 for their proposal to develop a community courtyard and Pembina Co-op was there to be part of the groundbreaking. The United Community Arts centre is on Moffatt Ave. in Pilot Mound and is home to the Louise Library. "The area will incorporate walking paths, seating areas, a pond, fruit trees and a vegetable garden. We want it to give back to the community in a variety of ways," said board member Bill Tiessen. The UCA has put on Rural Routes Concerts, Jam Sessions, Coffee Houses along with workshops, exhibits and other special events all in the name of art & community.
We congratulate the UCA on being a 2019 Community Spaces recipient and look forward to seeing the courtyard once it's done!
